District-Wide Literacy Leadership Initiative, Durham Public Schools

Dates of Engagement: 2012-2017

Description of Services Provided:

Studiously Consulting provided intensive professional development and leadership coaching to 53 school principals, 150 assistant principals, 53 instructional coaches, 15 district-level literacy coordinators, and 200 K-12 teachers. The professional development focused on creating grade-level curriculum maps, unit/course pacing guides, instructional materials, and other related items. For leadership coaching, we developed administrators’ capacity to lead school-wide literacy improvement efforts, including the adoption of new evidence-based reading programs and the creation of professional learning communities for teachers. We also facilitated monthly data review meetings to track progress and adjust strategies.

Key Outcomes & Achievements:

Over the five-year period, the district saw a 15% average increase in reading proficiency as measured by state assessments in grades 3-8 and high schools. Participant feedback indicated a significant increase in leaders' confidence and skills in literacy instruction and data analysis.

Alignment with RFP Objectives:

This project directly demonstrates our ability to support literacy leadership at the district and school levels, implement evidence-based practices, and guide data informed decision-making, all core objectives of the Project.
